Texas Inspiration

Cactus; future reference material
Prickly Pear, 20x16, collage on panel with toothpicks

Texas and Arizona have offered some really great cactus imagery which is making me want to do another painting of cactus. I have done a prickly pear from my last trip out west which was over three years ago, and it remains one of my favorite pieces. I think I would like to do a second cactus collage to commemorate this voyage from Florida to Arizona!

  1. I love this painting, Elizabeth! I've done a couple of prickly pears paintings and now I'm taking this one of yours as my challenge to do another using your techniques. I love the saguaro cactus's too, so maybe I'll try to do one of those beauties.
I have Jo's Cardinal on my mantle and everyone who comes to visit comments on it so then I have to tell the story. Thank you again.

  2. Even though it is a cactus, it makes me think of "The Yellow Rose of Texas". (And it is as beautiful as all your paper paintings.) What are the needles made of?
Maybe the Texas rose is really a yellow Texas cactus flower. I am currently in Texas and the heat and drought feel more like a cactus than a rose. What part of TX have you been in?
Love your work - as always!

  5. Thanks for all your kind words! the cactus needles are TOOTHPICKS, and it occurred to me that I could use them for the needles RIGHT IN THE DESERT where I was standing, long before I got back to the studio to do the work! I do love the prickly cactus and I too was thinking that it just might be the yellow rose of texas. I am going to do another one for sure, using one of these two photos I think. We were in Western Texas mountains, the photo of the pink cactus was taken in Van Horn. We also visited San Antonio and see earlier posts about my visit to the Cadillac Ranch in Amarillo.

Jo, you are quite welcome! I am glad that it's become a conversation piece, as it should be!!

I just love all the comments on the blog, it makes my day to see comments here. THANK YOU so much!
